The Hill Race

The Hill RaceThe Hill Race is a traditional part of every Highland Gathering and in the town of Ashbourne, the gateway to the Peak District, there was no difficulty in finding a tough but enjoyable route.

The 4 mile course, which has four major climbs as it crosses farmland (which is private land and can only be used on race day) and passes through a wood, is very challenging for all standards of runners. The race starts and finishes in the main arena where a large crowd will cheer the runners on their way and welcome them back as they make a final circuit to the finishing line.

If you would like to take part in the Hill Race you can obtain an entry form on this website and if it is received a week before the event you will also get free admission to the Highland Gathering. You can also enter on the day between 1.00pm and 2.30pm on the Recreation Ground Car Park, Cokayne Avenue, Ashbourne.

For 18 years Ashbourne Running Club has organized the Hill Race on behalf of the Highland Gathering Committee and it is thanks to the continued enthusiasm of the members, many of whom have long establish roles, that the race continues to thrive.

Around 40 marshals are required to guide the runners along the route and many more helpers work both before and after the race recording entries, preparing the course, timekeeping, handing out drinks and carrying out many other essential jobs.

Ashbourne Running Club was formed in 1988 and is a very active and friendly club with over 80 members of all standards and ages. A wide range of competitive and social activities are organized throughout the year and members take part in local races as well as big events at home and abroad. At the other end of the scale many members just enjoy running with friends on the Tuesday club nights or at the weekends, keeping fit and experiencing the wonderful Derbyshire countryside.
